Anna Vera, Myrtle Wilson
Anna Vera is a Junior BFA Acting major at Brenau University. She has been acting since she was four years old and knew she wanted to pursue acting as a career at age 16. She has played Mary in Run for your Wife, Miss Bingley and Mrs. Gardiner in Pride and Prejudice, Chorus in Antigone, Adams, Clinton, and Ensemble in Plays for 44 Presidents, Lucy in Abortion, Vocal Ensemble in Oklahoma!, and Lydia in Children of a Lesser God, among many others.
Anna first read The Great Gatsby in high school and says she “remembers loving the symbolism of everything.” Before she got the part of Myrtle, she thought Myrtle was “so much fun.” “She’s not me in the slightest, and that’s what truly drew me toward her.” She says her character is “a silly woman who wants more in her life: the shiny and extravagant things.”
To prepare for her role as Myrtle, Anna researched the poverty of the 1920s. She says when she steps on stage and sees the other characters, it all falls into place.
Anna says costumes “really help you dig deeper into a character because you’re in their clothes, their hair style, and their make up.” Her favorite costume is Myrtle’s lingerie.
Anna Vera goes on to say that this production of The Great Gatsby is their interpretation of the classic. “Have an open mind and lose yourself in the story about love, loss, and trying to live the past in a much different present.”
